LA Update 23 July 2007

We may only be consigning one two-year-old to this years South Island Sale on 10 August but he’s sure to be extremely sought after. He’s lot 110, a brown gelding by Australian shuttle stallion Dubai Destination from our broodmare Rivertaine. The Pines Thoroughbreds will present him on our behalf: given we only have the one entry it’s not economic for us to send down our staff to present him for sale.

A November foal, he was not sold at Karaka earlier this year primarily because he needed the extra time to develop physically. Sam also knew the big private reputation of his then unraced half brother O ‘Reilly Rally, and that he d be seen out later in the Hong Kongseason. O Reilly Rally has subsequently lived up to that reputation and then some, taking his record to two wins and a third from only three starts, with trainer Tony Cruz declaring him his Hong Kong Derby horse for next season. Add to the fact that his older half brother Regency Horse happens to have been one of the better sprinters in Hong Kong the last two seasons and it’s no wonder there is considerable interest in the Dubai Destination gelding from Hong Kong.

A slightly less anticipated fillip for the Dubai Destination gelding’s saleability has been the promising start to his dad’s siring career in the Northern Hemisphere. With his oldest crop two years of age during their current season, Dubai Destination’s already the sire of 5 individual winners. Earlier this year his oldest Southern Hemisphere stock were very well received at sale time with Sydney Easter and Karaka Premier average’s of $238,000 and $440,000 respectively.

It’s risky by passing the major sales with a well bred colt and targeting a late season sale. The buying bench in the middle of winter in Christchurch has a rather different look to it compared to Karaka Premier in January but the form of O Reilly Rally and the strongly made type the horse has furnished into make us think we have pulled the right rein (excuse the pun).

Sundays National Broodmare Sale saw three LA horses move to new homes and enthusiastic breeders. The Carolingian mare, Colouring Up - in foal to Towkay - returned our best price of $14,000, going to Charles Whyte of Hawkes Bay. Charles, who has just sold an unraced Towkay gelding to Macau for good money is sending her back to Towkay.

Bruce Perry Bloodstock acting on our behalf purchased lot 159 the Prized mare Jabeske in foal to O Reilly. The mare was bought for a new Wellington client and will also go to Towkay this season. Jabeske represented particularly good buying, especially when you consider the foal she carries will be a three quarter relation to Mike Breslin’s very promising filly in Zilt.

On the racing front this last week things have been fairly quiet. Delbrae’s effort for second at Timaru on Sunday with 59kg’s showed he is right on target for next months Winter Cup. A win there would be his third Group victory for the season making our purchase earlier this year of his dam We Leica even more sweeter. We Leica is in foal to Bradbury’s Luck.

We’d love you to make it out to the farm this Sunday the 29th of July to see us parade our two stallions, Towkay and the new kid on the block, Zed; Zed is fully booked by the way. It’s a 1pm kick-off and after the parade Sam will take you on a walk over the farm to look at some of the mares and weanlings.

Look forward to catching up with you this weekend. It’d pay to bring your wellies if you re looking to walk over the farm.
Aside from Sam greeting me at Karaka every year with “Have I got a horse for you” it’s about breeding successful and sound horses
