Little Avondale Newsletter April 2010

Sam's in Sydney for the Australian Yearling Sales which start on Tuesday 6 April. We are straight into action with lot 9 and the O Reilly half brother to the recent Australian group winner Larry's Never Late.

Back home the farm is gearing up for our largest representation in a number of years at the National Weanling Broodmare and Mixed Sale at Karaka which gets underway on Monday 3 May. Read on for more about the LA draft including the broodmare in foal to the sire of Saturdays Golden Slipper winner and the dispersal of mares by client Don Gordon.

Our racing interest last month centred on the winning performances of Aspinal (Pins-Clermont Rose)and Kallisan (Stratum-Eloa) along with Ace Aliado in Singapore last week.

Inglis Australian Yearling Sale 6 April to 8 April

LA has a select draft of three yearlings highlighted by the half brother to Larry's Never Late (LOT 9). Completing the LA draft are a Zabeel filly (LOT 346) from the much sought after family of Legs, Guyno and Sixty Seconds and a Darci Brahma colt (LOT 176) from the family of Don Gordon's fine taproot mare Phareno.

Sam will be returning to Sydney for the Broodmare Sale which begins on 13 April and anyone considering purchasing a broodmare should call him. On the back of the Karaka results it looks an opportune time to add a quality broodmare to your band.

National Weanling Broodmare and Mixed Sale at Karaka 3-5 May

As they say timing is everything with horses and the farms decision to mate the broodmare Kim Possible with the sire Stratum has paid off with the exciting stallion siring the Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily to join a growing list of promising youngsters including the two horses who ran the quinella in the juvenile race at Caulfield on Saturday; the winner Eclair Mystic who is undefeated now in three starts and the debutant Stratcombe. Kim Possible who sells as LOT 798 on Wednesday 5 May also happens to be from the family of Black Mamba, Roman Emperor, Rios and co.

LA client Don Gordon's decision to disperse the majority of his breeding stock offers buyers a great opportunity to buy into that wonderful family Don has developed from his taproot mare Phareno.

Other standouts in the LA draft are two weanlings with Premier pedigrees; a Savabeel half brother to Eloa from the family of Alamosa and an Elusive City half brother to Lady Igauzu from the family of Aspinal and Grand Dancer.

Towkay

Exciting Towkay galloper Ace Aliado (Towkay-Waikawa)...

put his unbeaten 7 win career on the line when he resumed from a four month break in the NZ $125,000 Class 1 Stakes at Kanji in Singapore on 25 March. With his principal target this campaign being the Singapore Derby, the unbeaten four-year-old was always going to be vulnerable in the 1400m feature and so it proved, but only just, finishing a nose second to fellow NZ bred galloper Good Feel with two lengths to the third place getter.

Ace Aliado was sold to Singapore as an unraced three-year-old by his breeder Christopher Grace, after winning a trial when trained by Foxton's David Haworth. The sale was brokered by Otaki agent Phil Cataldo.

Success in the Open sprint at Wingatui on 13 March was career win number eight for Towzan (Towkay-Kimberlite) following seven victories in the North Island before his transfer south late last year.

Other News

The group one win by Nacho Man certainly franks the form of the LA bred Kallisan (Stratum-Eloa) who deservedly claimed the two-year-old event at Waverley in late March after three successive seconds; when you consider that the closest any horse has got to Nacho Man running left handed this season is Kallisan when second to the Moroney trained colt at Woodville on 9 January. Kallisan was a $230,000 purchase from our 2009 Karaka Premier draft by Stephen Grey.

Another two-year-old sold from our Karaka Premier draft last year and shaping up as an exciting prospect for three-year-old racing is Kudakulari (Savabeel-Oentoria) who ran a fast closing third in the Listed TL Ballieu Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. Bred by Brown Thoroughbreds and JML Bloodstock the colt sold for $140,000 at Karaka to none other than Bart Cummings.

The LA bred Aspinal (Pins-Clermont Rose) beat a promising field of fellow three-year-olds with her success in the Rimpac Owens Plate over 1300m at Tauranga on Japan/NZ Trophy Day. Mufhasa, group two winner Needuask and Santangelo have won the same race over the last three seasons so Aspinal's win has put her in good company.

LA has a weanling Darci Brahma half brother to Aspinal who is likely to be sold at the National Yearling Sales at Karaka next year.
