That was the gross result for our three yearlings at this week's Sydney Easter Yearling Select Sale. The Zabeel - Rites of Spring colt that generated a great deal of interest from all the major players during inspections was a $500,000 purchase by Anthony Cummings. The Savabeel - Steluta colt on behalf of Ricky Savory, equaled the top price paid for a Savabeel yearling at auction to date, going to DGR Thoroughbreds for $300,000. And the Zabeel - Dancing Daze owned in partnership with Don Gordon, sold to Peter Moody for $150,000.
While the Sale produced spectacular gross receipts, there was even more evidence this year that you need to have a certain type to take to Sydney and be successful. Obviously having a Redoute's Choice or an Encosta De Lago helps but even then buyers are looking for a blemish free mature athlete.
The race performance of the weekend from an LA perspective had to be Rios's (Hussonet-Gussy Godiva) second in the Group Two Tulloch Stakes at Rosehill in Sydney. Already a group two winner in New Zealand this season, the Murray Baker trained colt is a live chance in this Saturdays Group One AJC Derby at Randwick.
Bred by Arthur and Mick Ormond, Rios was sold through the LA draft at the Karaka Premier Sale in 2006 for $65,000.
Another graduate from the LA Karaka Premier draft was Saturdays Singaporean winner Joker Dewan (Pins-Rose Adagio). Successful over 1400m and` bred by Barlow Thoroughbreds, the colt was sold for $40,000 at the 2005 edition.
Pinnacles (Fuji Kiseki-Galroof) franked his fourth in the Group One Goodwood Handicap on 12 April with an easy success over 1400 at Caulfield on Saturday. Galroof is a half sister to LA client Ricky Savory's broodmare Steluta, dam of last seasons Group One VRC Derby runner-up Gorky Park and the $300,000 Savabeel colt which sold at Sydney. Pinnacles starts in this Saturdays Group One Doncaster Handicap.

Saturdays Group One Coolmore Classic winner Eskimo Queen was a graduate from this sale in 2004, fetching just $2,500.
