LA Update 25th June 2007

LA Update 25 JUNE 2007

On national radio last Saturday, just moments before the start, even Sam’s cautious review, could not stop Towkrite (Towkay – Kimberlite) winning again, this time over 1200m at Otaki in a R76 event. To be fair to Sam, the track surface at Otaki, and not for the first time this season, differed from the penetrometer reading. The brother to Towzan came away in the closing stages to register his third career win, the second from his last three starts. With his on pace style he is a horse likely to reach an even better rating next season.

Sunday night in Hong Kong was a good one for LA connected horses. First off, two-year-old Telecom Owner (Cape Cross – Aunt Jemima) ran second over 1400m. Bred by Mick Ormond and sold out of the LA draft for $26,000 at the 2006 Karaka Select Yearling Sale, he’s from a Grosvenor mare, so you would fancy his chances of making into an even better three-year-old. Last month we sold, on Micks account, a Bertolini filly from Aunt Jemima at the National Weanling Sale; the buyer one T J McKee!

Two races later, Cash Money (Towkay – Also) had the commentators talking up his prospects for next season, following a big late run for fourth, this after been last into the straight. From the Epidaurus mare Also, Cash Money was bred by Lambourn Stud in Palmerston North.

To round off the evening the LA bred three-year-old O Reilly Rally (O Reilly – Rivertaine) came from well off the pace to win, sending his record to two wins and a third from just three starts in Hong Kong. His form is very timely given we will sell his younger half brother at the South Island Two Year Old Sale in August. Adding to his sale appeal with be that he’s sired by Dubai Destination, a stallion who has made a promising start to his breeding career with his oldest crop; Northern Hemisphere two-year-olds this season.

Over in OZ Kuda Bintang (Zabeel – So Like Lae), the full brother to our Caulfield Cup runner-up Laebeel won again, this time at Ipswich. Without a foal last year we eagerly await Laebeel successfully foaling to a 2006 cover by Pins.

Now if you ever needed a better reason to send a mare to our new stallion Zed, look no further than the latest Australian Sires Premiership; Commands sits in 7th place and Danewin 25thZed’s mum Emerald Dream happens to be a three-quarter-sister to both stallions!

Keep an eye out in next week’s newsletter for an update on Charlie, the LA mares going north to Karaka in July for the National Broodmare Sale and more news from around the farm.
