Lightning to Strike Thrice

German based Kiwi breeder Wes Van Der Scheer had a week to savour and he’s hoping that his good fortune continues at the NZB RTR Sale later this month as his entry, LOT 77, looks to capitalise on the racetrack success of his half-brother and the increasingly strong profile of their dam.

On behalf of Wes, LA sold last season’s Group 2 winner and 2000 Guineas runner-up Desert Lightning at Karaka 2021 for $150k to his trainer Peter Williams. The Pride of Dubai gelding, who made a winning return to the track in the 1200m Open Handicap at Pukekohe on Saturday, races for Sarah Green, Barneswood Farm and G Beemsterboer.

Wes purchased the High Chaparral mare Isstoora out of Australia with Desert Lightning in utero. The valuable mare, who has a Per Incanto 2YO colt being prepared by Kilgravin Lodge for the NZB RTR Sale on 23 and 24 November also has an outstanding yearling filly (who his is retaining to race) and Isstoora is in foal to Per Incanto with a late November due date.

Isstoora’s from the family of leading stallion Redoutes Choice and Saturday’s Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes winner Tom Kitten.

Talking of Per Incanto: what an impressive debut from the LA bred mare Alexandra Quick at New Plymouth on Friday. Raced by K&S Brown, Mary Burgess, LA, Moya McTamney, AE, AS, B and G Pickering, C&J Sharp, Allan Sharrock, Mike Smith, Stride Racing, R Swan and Aaron White, the 4YO Per Incanto mare, who commentator Tony Lee said was 100 to 1 turning for home, literally jumped out of the ground over the last 100m to win the 1200m maiden event in a time nearly two seconds faster than the R65 over the same distance.

In further Saturday action, LA managed to bookend Saturday’s Randwick meeting. The LA bred mare Eye Pea Oh (Capitalist-Tie Me Down by Pins) won the opening event over 1100m while progressive Per Incanto 4YO Gringotts took out the closing event, recording his fourth win in nine starts. Eye Pea Oh is raced by Hollymount Stud and trained by Richard and Will Freedman.

Per Incanto also had a double in Singapore on Saturday with Asif (previously 2x Sydney Metro winner, Sacriomony (x Royal Excess) winning his second race in Singapore over 1200m and Win Win (x Silver Penny) also winning over 1100m

Last but not least, Don Nicholson’s good mare Charms Star (Per Incanto-Anniesstar by Zed) added further black type to her resume when she finished second in the Listed 2000m Spring Classic at Riccarton on Saturday.

An impressive 8 days for Per Incanto with 9 winners, across 4 different countries

  • 4 in Australia (Master of Illusion, Amrap, Gringotts, Incendio)
  • 2 in NZ (Alexandra Quick and Charlotte Amalie)
  • 2 in Singapore (Asif and Win Win)
  • 1 in Malaysia (Healthy Star)
