Per Incanto notched his ninth stakes winner courtesy of the LA bred Magnum’s (Per Incanto-Sound Lover by Sound Reason) success in the Listed 1400m Bramco Granite and Marble Flying Handicap at Awapuni on Saturday, in the process giving the mare Sound Lover the unique achievement of her fourth stakes winner.
This season’s Group 2 winner Shadows Cast (Per Incanto-Ages Past by Slavic) was a meritorious third to Magnum after carrying top weight of 60kg.
Sound Lover’s 13th and final live foal, Magnum, whose win on Saturday was the 61st by progeny of his dam, joins Philosophe, Men At Work and Sir Lovesalot as black-type winners left by the Group 3 winning Sound Reason mare.
Sound Lover’s legacy looks set to live on through her young broodmare daughters Savamour and Bellabaci, the latter of which has an outstanding Shooting To Win filly in the LA draft at next week’s Inglis Sydney Easter Yearling Sale. The filly, Bellabaci’s third foal, is a half sister to Bella Amante, a winner and place-getter from just two career starts to date.
Repatriated to NZ after four wins and three stakes placings in Singapore with trainer James Peters, Magnum is owned by Johnnie Walker, Jason Fleming, David and Michael Wallace, Justin Knight, Ben Falloon and Sam Williams. The five-year-old is trained now by Cambridge’s Lauren Brennan who deserves a great deal of credit for the gelding rediscovering his best form.
Nadeem’s stakes winning two-year-old Sir Nate (Nadeem-Just Diamonds by No Excuse Needed) was a fast finishing third in the Group 1 1400m Courtesy Ford Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes at Awapuni. The Brown and Fusion Throughbreds bred colt has the makings of a lovely 3YO.
