A somewhat nomadic upbringing seems to have agreed with promising South African three-year-old The Great One (Nadeem-Heureka by Yamanin Vital), who recorded consecutive wins when successful in Durban on Thursday.
Bred at LA, The Great One was sold by Sledmere Stud on the farms behalf at the 2015 Sydney Inglis Classic Yearling Sale to South African interests. Offered later that year at the South African Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale, fetching second top price, the Brett Crawford trained gelding commenced his racing career last month with a seventh placing over 1200m before the two wins, which have both come at 1400m.
Heureka, The Great One’s dam, was a seven times winning mare whose two black-type victories came at 2000 and 2200m. Her staying prowess, which was to be expected given the Yamanin Vital factor and coming from the family of Balmerino, Surround and two-mile Cup winners Fulmen and Lord Hybrow, should provide her Nadeem son with plenty of scope as his career unfolds.
The Great One’s popularity at the sales in South Africa is likely to have had something to do with the record of his sire in the country. From his days at stud in Australia and the handful of progeny that found their way across the Indian Ocean, Nadeem managed to leave two individual Group 2 winners including Tajmeel, successful in the 2011 Group 2 South African Oaks. Mujarib also went on to win aGroup 2 in Dubai.
