Consistent black-type performer Spanish Bay (Nadeem-Belle Jest by Rory’s Jester) led all the way to win the 1400m Group 3 Saas Fee Stakes in Singapore on Sunday.
Giving weight to most of his rivals and setting up a sufficiently quick tempo to break 1.22 for the 1400m, the Jamie Peters trained 5YO defied all challenges to record his seventh victory, taking his stake-earnings to $770,000, an excellent return on the $85,000 Michael Freedman and Michael Wallace paid to secure him from the LA draft at the 2013 Karaka Select Sale.
Spanish Bay’s resume also includes success in the Group Two Singapore Classic and a third placing in the Group 1 Singapore Guineas.
Stablemate of the winner Magnum (Per Incanto-Sound Lover by Sound Reason), one of Singapore’s leading three-year-olds last season, again had no luck with barrier draw but produced an eye catching performance to run fourth.
“When he (Spanish Bay) can dictate from the front like that, he’s hard to beat,” concluded young trainer Jamie Peters about his second black-type win as a trainer on his own accord. Peters was assistant trainer to Michael Freedman before Freedman returned to Australia late last year.
“I was also very happy with Magnum’s run. It was difficult to make any ground from where he was and especially off these sectionals.
It could have been a different story if he had drawn a barrier”.
