Smart Win Carries Extra Significance

Smarty Pant’s (Charm Spirit- Brannickers by Darci Brahma) win in the 1300m Taranaki Pine Maiden at New Plymouth on Saturday was an extra bit special.

The mare is raced on lease by a syndicate including her breeders LA and their long-time client Hawkes Bay’s Bryan Hutchinson. Just like they handled the career of the Group winner Tinkerlicious (Nadeem-Tinkermia by Johar) for LA, Smarty Pant’s trainer Janelle Millar and her team have done a marvellous job with their communication and making ownership so enjoyable for her large ownership group.

To cap off a great day for Janelle and her hard working team, Smarty Pant’s win was part of a race to race double for the local stable.

Meanwhile, Per Incanto’s recent run of unearthing three-year-old filly talent continued at Woodville on Thursday with the stylish win on debut of the LA bred Bonham (Per Incanto-Fortune’s Choice by Redoute’s Choice).

Raced by prominent owner Gary Harding and trained by Johnno Benner and Hollie Wynyard, the 1000 Guineas nominated filly was purchased from LA’s 2019 Karaka Book 1 draft for $160,000.

First and foremost, stockman and people whose interest in the animal translates into an innate ability to read how a horse will develop. I’ll see a foal at LA and Sam or Buzz will tell me how they expect it to develop. I’ll see it during my Karaka inspections 12 months later, and you could blow me over with a feather
