Despite carrying three kilograms more weight than she carried to victory last year, game mare Aspinal (Pins-Clermont Rose) took out successive editions of the Cambridge Racing Clubs Maneline Cambridge Premier when recording her fifth career win in this year’s contest at Te Rapa on Saturday.
Success was well and truly deserved for the LA bred and raced mare. The five-year-old has only ever failed to weigh in at six of her 26 starts in New Zealand and her fourth place finishes on slow tracks in this seasons Group One Railway and the Group Three Darley Plate were full of merit given her overall record on such surfaces.
Aspinal will be served by O'Reilly this breeding season and race on to hopefully gain black type success to go alongside her third in the Group Two Hawkes Bay Guineas.
The race at Te Rapa which followed Aspinal’s success also had a successful LA connection when our Hawkes Bay client Alan Jackson’s horse Pelegrini (Mr Nancho-Cashcade) continued on his winning way with a facile victory in the Rating 85 1400m. In fact buyers may lament the one that got away when they consider we took Pelegrini’s half sister by Pentire to the Karaka Yearling Sales on Alan’s behalf earlier this year but had to pass the filly in.
