The fighting qualities shown in Monachee’s (O’Reilly-Kincia) victory over 2000m at Riccarton on Saturday should hold the five-year-old mare in good stead as she aims towards some of the South Island Cup’s over the next few months. Sold from LA’s 2009 Karaka Select draft, the Lorraine Jameson bred mare was recording back to back victories with her latest success, her fourth career win from 28 starts.
Another winner over the last week recording consecutive victories and with LA connections was the four-year-old mare Prenuptial (Towkay-Shez the Girl) who won over 1400m at Wingatui for her owners and trainers Brian and Shane Anderton. From a Yamanin Vital mare, Prenuptial is bred on the same cross as this season’s group two winning Towkay filly Chicharita, as is Lot 290 in next month’s National Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Sale, a weanling Towkay colt from the Don Eduardo mare Senagalia.
The Richard Cottle bred Exciting Ahead (Towkay-Young Jude) who won over 1200m in Singapore last week was purchased from our 2009 Karaka Select draft by Kevin Myers.
Zed was represented by his third individual winner when the Guy Lowry and Grant Cullen trained Ambitious Prince (Zed-Zephyr Lass) won on debut over 1200m at Woodville last week.
A great run of autumn weather has assisted the team to put the finishing touches to our draft for the National Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Sale which gets underway at Karaka on 7 May. Some of the highlights amongst our 19 weanlings include a filly by exciting first season sire Mastercraftsman from the stakes producing Palace Music mare Tender Poison and an O’Reilly colt from the stakeswinning Pins mare Bella Valentina.
One only has to look at the record of first season sires at Karaka of late to see how popular most of them are at yearling sale time and given the popularity of our new stallion Per Incanto (know on the farm as Magnum) in his first season at stud last year, buyers should inspect the four young mares we have in foal to the group three winning son of Street Cry. If “Magnum” leaves foals looking anything like him then the resultant progeny from these four mares should be standouts
