Exciting Times Beckon for Progressive Mares

Lightly raced four-year-old mares Sweepstake (Per Incanto-Lottery by Carnegie) and Bella Amante (Pins-Bellabaci by Zabeel) have underlined their credentials for summer racing with winning efforts last weekend.

Last season’s NZ 1000 Guineas place-getter Sweepstake, sparingly raced since her Classic placing, won over 1340m at Wanganui on Saturday by five lengths, with her trainer Mike Breslin indicating post race that her principal season target is likely to be the Group 1 NZ Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes at Te Aroha.

And while the LA bred and part owned Bella Amante still has a fair way to go to match the Group 1 placing of Sweepstake, her cosy Canberra trial victory last Friday showed she’s on track to add to the win and second placing of her three-start first campaign when she returns to the races in the very near future.
