Little Avondale Newsletter May 2011

Shezazed (Zed-Shezdabomb by Desert Sun) has given Zed, pictured below, a near perfect start to his stallion career, running second on debut in the two-year-old race at Hawera over the weekend. Bred by local trainer Andrew Campbell and trained locally by Roger Allen at Opaki, the filly should benefit immensely from the outing and experience - not having had a trial beforehand.

The farm has had an outstanding last month of race results in Hong Kong, including a treble at Sha Tin on 7 May and the recent G2 win in England by the Street Cry colt Carlton House owned by The Queen! That now has him favourite for the English Derby on 5 June and  is further vindication for our decision to bring the first son of Street Cry to N.Z for stud duties in the  G3 winning sprinter Per Incanto.

Parts of the market at the National Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Stock Sale held up well and clearly showed there is still demand for the right type of product. Read on for more about the LA yearling passed in at the 2008 Karaka Sales who Gai Waterhouse plans to aim at this year's Melbourne Cup.

Towkay

Currently the fourth leading sire by number of winners in Hong Kong, Towkay's season tally could be actually be much higher given a particularly large number of placegetters   - just last weekend Towkay had 6 starters on the Sha Tin programme for a winner, a second, a third and two fifth placegetters.

Winners for Towkay over the last month include:

  • Fun Heroes (Towkay-Ashley Downs) the half brother to Can't Keeper Down won over 1400m in Hong Kong
  • Speedy (Towkay-Stella Suprema) the Helen Phinney bred gelding won again in Hong Kong last weekend
  • Elbeesutina (Towkay-Gaysutina) the LA bred mare was successful over 1400m at Wingatui last week

Per Incanto

Street Cry has proven his unique ability to sire winners of the truly great races of the world, including the Kentucky Derby, Breeders Cup Classic, Melbourne Cup and Breeders Cup Juvenile, and on 5 June his son Carlton House could well add the English Derby - a race that he is currently favourite for at 5-2 - to that illustrious list.

Interestingly for pedigree buffs and especially owners of Towkay or O'Reilly mares considering Per Incanto's court this spring, Carlton House's second dam is by Mill Reef giving the colt a duplication of Never Bend. Both Towkay and O'Reilly are sons of Mill Reefs outstanding sire son Last Tycoon.

Of course the strength of such a champion outcross stallion, like Street Cry, is that he's so compatible with a number of bloodlines. And with Per Incanto's female family containing only one strain of Northern Dancer, it's also a great opportunity to mate Northern Dancer line mares to him.

National Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Sale

LA took 12 weanlings north and sold 11 for an average price of $7,900. Stock lacking in pedigree and/or type, especially if they were fillies, predictably struggled in the ring but there was a lot of competition for any lots worthy of the Karaka Premier or Select Yearling Sale.

The stallion announcements in recent weeks are testimony to the confidence the industry still has in the middle to upper end of the market.

Complimented by the farms recent private purchase of two highly credentialed weanlings and the recent news of a couple of potential Premier Sale standout lots to be prepared on behalf of clients, LA will be taking one of it's strongest yearling drafts in years to Karaka this January.

Other News

What a game win by the LA bred Kekova (Elusive City-Racing Waters) pictured left  on Saturday at Te Rapa. She was never going to win at the top of the straight or even at the 100m but she dug deep even with the loss of the whip at the 200m mark. Following her second to the highly promising Geographer at Hastings last start she by rights was expected to win, but the track conditions were very testing at Waikato. The Bleap syndicate, who also raced the stakes  winning LA bred mare Rapid Kay, can look forward to exciting times next season with this mare.

In winning the first leg of the final treble at the Sha Tin meeting in Hong Kong on 7 May, the LA bred National Treasure(Pins - Trigon lass),  bought up his fourth Hong Kong win in just five starts. The second leg went the way of the Angela Irving nee Williams bred Goodview Successor (O'Reilly-Zalass), who took out a Class Three event over 1800m, his third win in his last four starts in Hong Kong.

Goodview Successor, who was a $50,000 purchase by John White Bloodstock from our 2008 Karaka Select Sale draft, will hopefully have a half brother or sister by our new stallion Per Incanto on the ground next spring, with Zalass due to visit the son of Street Cry this season.

Last but by no means least, the final race of the day resulted in a most deserved win for the LA and Pip Carroll bred Fun Heroes(Towkay-Ashley Downs) who won a Class Three event over 1400m. Fun Heroes, pictured right,  who is a half sister to the New Zealand Oaks runner-up Can't Keeper Down, was a $100,000 purchase by Ginger Tankard's Waikato Bloodstock   from our 2008 Karaka Select Sale draft.

Talking of Can't Keeper Down, who was passed in as part of our 2007 Carnival Sale draft at Karaka, another passing in an LA draft who escaped the yearling buyers attention was Tullamore (Savabeel-Trocair). Passed in for $55,000 at the 2008 Karaka Select Sale the four-year-old Christopher Grace bred and part owned gelding is doing sterling service from the Gai Waterhouse stable, recording his third win from his last five starts when taking a handicap at the feature Scone meeting last Saturday with the steadier of 60kgs.
