It’s probably a little inaccurate to call a 6YO mare who was Group placed and a Listed fourth place getter in her last campaign progressive, but the authoritativeness of Mrs Chrissie’s first up win at Ballarat on Saturday indicated she’s gone to another level, something the female stock of Per Incanto are prone to do, as the likes of Roch 'N' Horse and Belclare attest.
Bred and owned by Chris Doak and Rosie Ealden, the Cambridge couple also share in her racing lease partnership. The powerfully built mare’s latest success took her record to six wins and five minor placings from 20 career starts and earnings north of AUS $400K.
“She was really good,” Assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said. “I didn't expect her to be in the position she was, rear of the field, but it just goes to show that as a mares mature, they can be written differently.
“Black type is the key for her now. She is placed at that level, but we need to get that win, and I'd say for a mare, you’re either the Christmas Stakes, (Listed, 1100m) or possibly the Black Pearl (Listed 1200m), but the Christmas Stakes being 1100 m is ideal.”
Mrs Chrissie is a full brother to the multiple black type place getter Don Carlo. It's a family Chris and Rosie have nurtured astutely, and they hold high hopes for Mrs Chrissie's full sister Glenda Goodwitch as a broodmare.
Glenda Goodwitch looked very promising however she injured herself shortly after running 6th in the Group 1 Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes as a 2YO and was retired. Her first foal, a Time Test gelding was recently sold to Hong Kong after running well in a Cambridge trial back in July.
On the subject of Time Test, the stallion looks to have another promising type in the form of Proved, who remained unbeaten with her success at Moonee Valley on Friday night over 1200m. Bred by Windsor Park Stud, the 4YO mare looks to have plenty of scope, and being by a mare who is hal sister to the VRC Derby winner Monaco Consul, she should find further distance to her liking.
