It was the least experienced of the three Per Incanto fillies that competed in the 1600m G1 Gavelhouse.Com NZ 1000 Guineas at Riccarton on Saturday who produced the best performance. The Christopher Grace bred and part owned filly Sweepstake (Per Incanto-Lottery by Carnegie), having just her fourth career start, was game in defeat, running on well to finish third behind the winner and warm favourite La Diosa.
Meanwhile at Saturday’s other domestic meeting, stakeswinner and dual G1 placed 2YO Rocanto (Per Incanto-Romantic Liaisons by Danasinga) made a winning return to the races, claiming the R85 1200m event at Tauranga. The Dame Lowell Goddard bred entire, who hadn’t raced for nearly 10 months, took his stake earnings over the $150,000 mark with the Gate Pa success, his fifth win in 13 career starts.
Another Per Incanto 3YO filly with a promising future looks to be the Brown Thoroughbreds bred Luroel (Per Incanto-Our Prized Rose by Prized). Raced by Lucy, Rosey and Ella Brown, the Roydon Bergerson trained filly, who debuted with a second placing behind the highly touted Exhibit at Woodville, made no mistakes at her next start, taking out the 3YO maiden event at Awapuni last Thursday.
Former Hong Kong galloper Flying Ibis (Nadeem-Fiery Sunset by Cape Canaveral), who has really hit a rich vein of form, made up for a narrow second placing on the first day of the Carnival to score over 1600m at Riccarton on Saturday.
