Throughout a stallion career which has produced 15 individual stakes winners, Nadeem has shown an uncanny ability to work successfully with certain bloodlines and the impressive debut performance of his three-year-old filly Mohaka (Nadeem-Diplomacy by No Excuse Needed) at Taupo on Wednesday once again reinforces what a potent sire he is when mated accordingly.
The Guy Lowry and Grant Cullen trained Mohaka, after doing a bit of work early in the race, fought strongly in the straight to finish a close third behind the stakes winning pair of Xpression and Santa Catarina.
Nine of Naddem’s stakes winning tally contain Never Bend or his dam Lalun in their female line but it’s the emergence of his affinity with No Excuse Needed mares which will have followers of line breeding principles sitting up and taking notice.
Last season’s stakes winning pair of Karavali and the 2000 Guineas bound Sir Nate are from the No Excuse Needed mare Just Diamonds. Diplomacy, Mohaka’s mother, is the only other No Excuse Needed mare to have visited Nadeem.
Breeding is certainly no science but the key to Naddem’s potency with No Excuse Needed can in part, probably be attributed to duplicating the mare Natalma, dam of Northern Dancer and great grand dam of Danehill. No Excuse Needed carries a female line of Natalma through his sire Machiavellian. With Per Incanto being a grandson of Machiavellian, mares by the son of Street Cry should also work extremely well with Nadeem.
