The superlatives seem to have already all been used on Towkay mare Viadana (Towkay-Yeah Nah by Kinjite) this season as she has cut a swath through the 1400m-1600m domestic features. (Photo right coutesy of Trish Dunnel) Saturday saw her again dominate the best fillies and mares in the country as she landed the country’s pinnacle event for the fairer sex, the 1600m Group 1 Fiber Fresh New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes at Te Aroha.
Adding a third Group 1 victory to her resume, the LA bred 6YO took her stake earnings to just shy of $700,000. The Lance Noble trained mare heads to Sydney for a crack at the Group 1 Queen of the Turf Stakes in a fortnight.
Towkay’s latest new stakes performer Rohaise (Towkay- Volaisha by Volksraad) made it back to back stakesplacings with her second place finish in the Listed Christchurch Casino Easter Cup at Riccarton on Saturday.
One of Viadana’s opponents in the Queen of the Turf Stakes is likely to be the high quality Nadeem mare Sharnee Rose (Nadeem – Farasha by Jeune), who added to her fine record with a strong finishing second to Catkins in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday. Her half brother by Makfi was sold as LOT 3 on the first day of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale on Tuesday for $200,000.
