Whilst trainer Mark Newnham concedes that his exciting charge Lanciato (Per Incanto-Surreptitious by O’Reilly) may not be the easiest horse to watch, he’ll happily put-up with his trademark last to first style , a trait the exciting Per Incanto five-year-old displayed again on Friday when delivering a pulverising finish to land the Group 3 1400m Newcastle Newmarket at the Broadmeadow track.
“He does leave you wondering if he’s going to make it in time” Newnham said after Lanciato’s latest win, his fourth in succession and second consecutive at black-type level following success in the Listed Carrington Stakes at Rosehill.
Winning rider Rachel King was equally taken with the JML and LA bred gelding adding “He’s unbelievable, he gives you such a good feel, and that turn of foot he’s got. There’s not many horses that can sprint like that.”
Australian bookmakers have reacted to Lanciato’s Group 3 win by shortening his odds to $21 for the $3,000,000 Doncaster Mile on 7 April.
Lanciato joins Group 3 winner Dolcetto and Group 2 winner Shadows Cast as new stakes winners sired by Per Incanto so far during the 2017/18 season.
Per Incanto also had a strong week locally with Magic of the Sun (Per Incanto-Sunstrike by Rock of Gibraltar) and the Lowell Goddard bred Magic Note (Per Incanto-Magic Flute by Zerpour) scoring at Avondale and Riccarton respectively.
