Debutant three-year-old Spanish Bay (Nadeem-Belle Jest by Rory’s Jester), pictured left as a yearling, hinted at much more to come with an authoritative win over 1200m in Singapore on Sunday evening. His wide draw of 11 was quickly nullified as he found the lead on the rail within 100m from where he proceeded to turn the race into a procession, winning untouched by four lengths in good time with over three lengths to the third horse.
An $85,000 purchase by Michael Freedman and Michael Wallace from our 2013 Karaka Select draft, the gelding greatly impressed his initial handler, local trainer Tony Pike, who at one stage had aspirations to set him for the Karaka Million. Nature intervened as it often does with youngsters and he left these shores to join Michael Freedman’s yard unraced. He looks a horse to follow.
Coworth Park (Nadeem-Heart Set by St Covet) started a good weekend for his sire when he won over 2050m in Brisbane on Saturday. It was a particularly good effort by the Robert Heathcote trained five-year-old, stepping straight to a middle distance from 1500m at just his third run back in a new preparation, and he looks set to fulfil the staying promise he exhibited throughout his last campaign.
Interestingly St Covet, the damsire of Coworth Park, is out of a Sound Reason mare, resulting in a 3x4 duplication of the son of Bold Reason. This is not the first good winner Nadeem (Redoute’s Choice – Candide by Sound Reason) has had duplicating Sound Reason something which should encourage breeders with Sound Reason line mares.
