Te Parae’s Angela Williams had good reason to take more than a passing interest in a couple of races from Australia last week.
Angela, who is Sam's cousin, bred the Per Incanto 4YO Gypsy Tricks, an impressive all the way winner over 1000m on debut at Yarra Glen on Friday. Passed in with a $60,000 reserve from the LA draft at the 2020 Karaka sale, Gypsy Tricks was taken home to Te Parae and left to grow out for 18 months before joining the Hastings stable of Guy Lowry earlier this year.
After winning a trial on the synthetic at Cambridge in July, Angela sold the gelding to leading Melbourne trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr.
Gypsy Tricks is the second to last foal of the O'Reilly mare Lutine Belle who proved to be a handy broodmare for Angela. Her first foal was the multiple stakes place getter Cutting Up Rough, who coincidentally was the first Per Incanto progeny to be sold through a public auction, when purchased by his trainer Ralph Manning for $2000 from the old Wanganui mixed sale.
Her next two foals, also by Per Incanto, resulted in the speedy three-win mare Carillion and the multiple Hong Kong winner Wood On Fire. The mares last foal was a Time Test filly which Paul Willetts bought from the LA draft at Karaka in 2021 for $27,500. Named Quick Fire, the filly also looks to have the family ability, running a nice third at her only trial at Cambridge back in June before been put aside.
Twnty-four hours before Gypsy Tricks success, Renato, another patiently handled Per Incanto 4YO from the Savabeel mare Tick-Tock Time, finished a rather unlucky third over 1000m in Perth when having his first start in almost 12 months after two educational starts for his trainers Michael and Chris Gangemi.
Renato who was bred by Angela, was an $80,000 purchase from LA’s 2020 Karaka Book 1 draft.
LA are delighted to be selling on behalf of Angela and a partner, as lot 1038 in its 2023 Karaka Book 2 draft, a colt by first season sire Ten Sovereigns from the Zabeel mare Sunset Magic.
