Stakes Success Caps Big Week for LA Broodmare

Avonello’s (Belardo-Real Angel by O’Reilly) win the Listed Welcome Stakes at Riccarton on Saturday capped a big week for the LA broodmare Real Angel, whose first foal the Per Incanto mare Angelica, won her maiden race at Te Aroha on Tuesday.

A $30,000 purchase by co-owner Chris Rutten from LA’s 2020 Karaka Book 2 draft, Avonello is raced by Chris, his wife Donna and LA.

An unraced daughter of O’Reilly, Real Angel is a half sister to the LA bred dual Australian stakes winner Marquardt. It is also the family of multiple Group 1 winners Dandy Andy and Ballroom Babe.

Real Angel, who has a Tivaci yearling filly, recently foaled a full brother to Avonello.

First and foremost, stockman and people whose interest in the animal translates into an innate ability to read how a horse will develop. I’ll see a foal at LA and Sam or Buzz will tell me how they expect it to develop. I’ll see it during my Karaka inspections 12 months later, and you could blow me over with a feather
