They don't breed them much tougher than the well related mare Quick Fire (Time Test – Lutine Belle by O’Reilly), who recorded her third win from her last five starts when taking the feature staying race at Te Rapa on Saturday.
In very heavy track conditions, the Angela Williams bred 5YO mare was too strong over the 2400m trip, staging a stride for stride battle with the runner-up for the last 350m.
A $27,500 yearling purchase from the LA draft at the 2021 NZB Book 2 Sale by Paul Willetts, Quick Fire showed plenty of resolve when first put into training, with Matamata trainer Kylie Fawcett at one stage wondering whether she would ever be able to race Quick Fire away from her home track, such was the filly’s absolute stubbornness when her routine was broken in any form.
With maturity and her trainers guile, the mare has put together a good horses record of 5 wins and 2 minor placings from just 16 career starts, and nearly $100k in stake earnings.
Lutine Belle, the dam of Quickfire has been an excellent broodmare for Williams, who has the original Williams family Te Parae property. The mares first four foals, all by Per Incanto, were the 10 time winning stakes placed Per Incanto gelding Cutting Up Rough, the eight-time Hong Kong winner Wood On Fire, the speedy mare Carillion who won three races and finishing with the multiple Queensland winner Gypsy Tricks . Quick Fire was Lutine Belle’s fifth and final foal.
Williams is breeding from Carillion, who has a Banquo 2YO gelding, in training with Guy Lowry and Leah Zydenbos. The mare also has an Ardrossan yearling filly and an Armory weanling filly.
From a family of gallopers who have been tough and hard wearing, it’s not difficult to see Quick Fire improving again next season.
