USA Winner For Towkay

Xpectation ( Towkay- Wooden Doll by Woodborough) has won again in the USA, this time taking a US$30,000 1600m Allowance race at Arlington Park in Washington DC last week. Another brilliant Wairarapa owned and trained winner in the Mudgeway with Tavistock taking the honours for Andrew Campbell. Read on for news on a couple of our Karaka yearlings who received pedigree upgrades during the month and a Lohnro filly that is getting more admirers than Cameron Diaz. Towkay Winners over the last month have been: Sharkay (Towkay-Lady of the Lake) - 1200m winner at Waverley. Ballistic Ruler (Towkay-Ballistic) - 2000m success in Victoria. The better tracks in August have seen the Towkays commence racing campaigns and step out at the trials. Towkay looks to have a particularly promising batch of three-year-olds this season headed up by Rampant (Towkay-On Honeymoon) who ran second to The Hombre at his only juvenile start back in May. Rampant who recommenced racing at Taupo early in August with a close third to leading Wanganui Guineas contender Gaston is targeting the Wellington Guineas in October. The Mark Oulaghan, B.Payn and Herb Renall bred Blonde Bombshell (Towkay-Millie Munro), shows distinct promise from John Sargent's yard for owners Peter Walker, Sir Patrick Hogan and Tony Timpson. Trials placed behind Katie Lee last year the filly looks primed for her debut judging by her win at the Te Teko trials this week. Zed Dido delivered us the farms first foal for the new season, courtesy of a Zed filly on 15 August (pictured below). The new arrival has a yearling full sister who LA will race next season in partnership with Bruce Perry Bloodstock. The Zed yearlings are continuing to impress good judges with Sam recently purchasing the mare Maria's Story, a Woodborough half sister to the very smart sprinter Richard Beymer, for LA client John Gilbert expressly to visit the stallion. 2010 Karaka Yearlings When talking about the Eight Carat family... it's really only a matter of time before class bubbles to the surface and that's been the case with the former LA broodmare The World Is Mine (Last Tycoon - Great Klaire) who is from a half sister to the famous matron. We retained The World Is Mine's 2002 Pins filly Miss Moneytree. Unraced due to injury, Miss Moneytree's first foal is the promising Victorian filly Lady Pachira by Keeper who has a victory and third placing from just two starts for trainer Tony Noonan. Miss Moneytree has a yearling Darci Brahma colt going to Karaka next year and due to foal to Perfectly Ready this season. The World Is Mine's second filly happens to be Zabeel mare Cat's Diamond now racing on lease from Kris Lee's Sydney stable for Steven Seabrook's Sport Syndications. An impressive debut winner at Randwick last autumn the four-year-old is back in training for a spring campaign. Rapid Kay's half sister Whitewater Fury (Pins-Racing Waters), who scored second time to the races this week over 1300m in Victoria for trainer Danny O Brien, has a yearling full sister heading to Karaka. Shaping up as one of the stars of our Karaka draft is Naiper client Alan Jackson's Lohnro filly from the Danehill mare Danone. This girl will sell herself on looks even allowing for her bloodlines although we won't begrudge Denman demoralizing more high class fields through the spring. A full sister to group winner Saxon and stakesplaced Power of Destiny who have both just begun stallion careers in Australia, Danone - in foal to Lohnro - was purchased for Alan by Michael Wallace Bloodstock at the 2008 Magic Millions Broodmare Sale. Actually Alan has been on good role of late with his Don Eduardo yearling colt from the Shirley Heights mare Juliette Heights bound to get some mileage out of the dual stakes success by Don Eduardo progeny at Randwick not to mention two half relations winning during August. The interestingly named Donttellthewife (Volksradd-Juliette Heights) who won over 1400m at Kranji on 28 August is targeting the Singapore Guineas later this month. Other News Towards the end of last racing season we bought you news of "Charlie" winning first time to the trials. For those of you with good memories "Charlie" is the name we gave to the yearling we highlighted in our newsletters leading up to the 2008 Karaka Sales Series. Well we can report that the still officially unnamed No Excuse Needed-Soneri gelding is now two from two at the trials with another success this time at Otaki a fortnight ago. We are pleasantly surprised with Charlie's precocity because he was quite a strapping colt that we imagined would be beginning his first preparation about now so all bodes well for trainer David Haworth and connections when this likable gelding with a neat personality steps out on race day. Environment Patron (Montjeu-Nikki's Bride) who scored over 1600m in Adelaide during August was bred by LA, Don Gordon and Bryan Hutchinson, and was sold from LA's 2006 Karaka draft for $400,000 to BBA Ireland. A reminder about the NZTBA's seminar at Awapuni on Sunday 13 September beginning at 1.30pm. It's a good opportunity to hear about avenues aside from the traditional yearling sales for selling your young horses and the prospects for new markets in Asia. With both Australia's and our own foal crops continuing a downward trend this is a chance, particularly for those breeders undecided about committing mares this season, to understand the opportunities available to horses who will be yearlings in 2011/2012. We'll see a few of you at Hastings on 18th September for the Hastings Racing Awards dinner and then again on 19th for Windsor Park Plate Day where we look to have a few potential runners.
